From April 20 to 28, 2018 St Petersburg will host the Harlequin, annual festival and Russian national award for the best
productions for children of the previous theatre season, founded 15 years ago by Petersburg children’s music theatre Zazerkalie, Harlequin Charity Fund, and Theatre Union of the Russian Federation.  

Competition for the Russian "Harlequin" National Theatre Award is held as a part of the festival.  

Nominees are selected during the year by Expert Council which includes known Russian critics and theatre makers. This year 9 productions from different places (St Petersburg, Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Rostov-on-Don, Petrozavodsk, and Novokuibyshevsk) among 88 applicants were selected for competition. Its results will be announced by jury on April 28 at the awarding ceremony, where winners in different nominations will be awarded with silver Harlequin figurines. Theatre-winner in nomination “best production for children” will also get grant for the new production.

Apart of the competition and out-of-competition performances the Harlequin’s programme 2018 has a wide range of special events among which there are two workshops for young directors. First one will be dedicated to literature and playwriting for children and teenagers, another – to comic books. Theme of the comics will be discussed at the lecture “Comics as an Art Form” and meeting with famous Scottish cartoonist Tom Gauld.  His brilliant comic book Goliath became an inspiration for performance staged by Theatre.Com Laboratory’s participants which will be presented during the festival.
