Association for Development of Theatre for Children and Young People, ASSITEJ Serbia proudly announces CALL FOR APPLICATIONS for participation in the first Next Generation Programme Residency for young artists active in the field of performing arts for young audiences, entitled “Limitations and Challenges in Performing Arts for Children and Young People”.

We invite professional young artists (aged 25 to 35) from Austria, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Slovenia and Serbia, active in various spheres of performing arts for children and young people, interested in research, furthering the arts for young audiences, as well as in artistic and professional development and networking with their colleagues regionally and globally .

Next Generation Residency Programme is to take place from October 7 to 14 2018 in Novi Sad, in collaboration with the School for Primary and Secondary Education “Milan Petrović” in Novi Sad. The six day programme for the group of 16 selected participants includes workshops, presentations, theatre visits, attending a dress rehearsal of the inclusive performance “Dis_Sylphide” by the artistic group PerArt, social events and socialising with the programme participants.

The workshop will be lead by acclaimed local and international artists active in the field of performance arts for young people, practitioners with great experience in theatre pedagogy and workshop management: Vigdis Jakobsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland), theatre director, artistic director of Reykjavik Arts Festival in Iceland; Nina Hajiyianni (Liverpool, UK), theatre director, artistic director of Action Transport Theatre and one of the founders of the “Next Generation” initiative;  Jovana Rakić (Serbia), choreographer, dance pedagogue and contemporary dance performer with extensive experience in professional work as a choreographer and pedagogue and an in-depth knowledge of Serbian cultural scene, also a member of ASSITEJ Serbia executive board, collaborator and member of multiple associations active in the field of contemporary dance and performing arts (Station Service for Contemporary Dance, Pokretnica, “Hajde da…” group etc).

The Residency focuses on the issues of the position, limitations and relations of both young audiences and young creatives, both in their personal practice and in the context of (non)existing cultural policies and the current situation in contemporary theatre for children and young people. These are to be addressed, considered and discussed through various formats. One of the central issues of this residence is the position of the artist and the work on empowering young artists to embrace responsibilities and challenges and, through their work, make an impact towards changes, implement their newly attained knowledge and experiences in their day to day work and turn the shortcomings of existing practices into advantages.

The organisers’ intention is for this programme and the experience of the group of participants to be used as a starting point for an expanded and prolonged Next Generation Programme over the forthcoming four year period.

Next Generation Programme operates within the ASSITEJ International association, with the goal to support artistic and cultural exchange and collaboration with young professional artists worldwide. Following the success of the pilot programme of ASSITEJ at International Congress in Adelaide (Australia) in 2008, the initiative has become one of the Association’s informal networks, so far realising NG Residence programmes in Japan (2012), Austria (2013), Poland (2014), United Kingdom (2016), South Africa (2017) and Japan, Pakistan and China in 2018.

Organised by ASSITEJ Serbia, the programme is realised in collaboration with the School for Primary and Secondary Education “Milan Petrović”, in Novi Sad, with the financial support provided by the Secretariat for Culture of the City of Novi Sad and ASSITEJ International Association, with the recommendation from the Foundation Novi Sad 2021.
