Open Call: ASSITEJ Next Generation residency programme in Tokyo

The Next Generation (NG) residency programme is an ASSITEJ initiative, designed to support artistic and cultural exchange and collaboration between international artists aged 36 years or below, interested in theatre for young audiences, at ASSITEJ events. 

A NG residency programme for 25 artists, critics, producers, researchers, from Asia and around the world will be held in Tokyo over the period of MIRAI Festival: 2020 International Performing Arts Festival for Children and Young People in Japan / The 20th ASSITEJ World Congress from 14-24 May, 2020.

The NG residency programme at MIRAI Festival will include two tracks:

Track one will include:

  • Theatre for young audiences’ performances from the official performance programme of MIRAI Festival;
  • Master classes and workshop sessions led by recognised artists and industry professionals;
  • Discussions, seminars and workshops;
  • Visits to Japanese schools and workshops with children;
  • Networking with theatre practitioners from within the Next Generation residency and from the global ASSITEJ community.

Track two will include:

  • The creation of a performance that will be presented to the participants of the World Congress (created with the group of Next Generation participants). This performance will be the main focus of track two.

Track two will to some extent (less than in track one) include:

  • Theatre for young audiences’ performances from the official performance programme of MIRAI Festival;  
  • Master classes and workshop sessions led by recognised artists and industry professionals;
  • Discussions, seminars and workshops;
  • Visits to Japanese schools and workshops with children;
  • Networking with theatre practitioners from within the Next Generation residency and from the global ASSITEJ community

ASSITEJ Japan will provide:

  • Accommodation for 11 nights
  • All registration, theatre tickets, seminars, and access to workshops
  • Food or per-diems
  • Facilitation of the programme in partnership with Next Generation Network

Next Generation participants are expected to fundraise for their own travel to the event. However, Next Generation applicants who are accepted to the programme may apply for a partial travel grant from ASSITEJ, amounting to up to 500 USD per person. The number of travel grants is limited and dependent on funds raised through Friends of ASSITEJ.

As an inclusive programme, Next Generation welcomes applications from artists who identify as Deaf and/or Disabled.
