Call for Short Contributions from Emerging Scholars

The Routledge Companion to Drama in Education

Dr. Mary McAvoy and Professor Peter O’Connor

We invite emerging scholars (early-career/pre-tenure scholars, graduate students, or scholar/artists) to contribute a short original essay to the forthcoming “Companion to Drama in Education.” This volume, part of the Routledge Companion series, will be a key resource for anyone researching, developing methodologies for, facilitating/teaching in, or studying Drama in Education and includes a range of contributions from leaders in the field.

Drama in Education, a unique performance discipline focused on process-oriented theatrical techniques designed to engage a broad spectrum of learners and distinct from but adjacent to the more broadly construed Applied Drama discipline, is an exciting, theoretically significant, and historically rooted field of inquiry and genre of transdisciplinary theatrical/pedagogical practice.  We anticipate the volume will be published early 2021.

In keeping with field’s commitment to nurturing emerging scholarship, practice, and pedagogy from a diversity of perspectives and through a variety of scholarly, pedagogical and artistic lenses, we invite short case studies, practitioner reflections, interviews, lesson plans, etcetera (500 – 2,000 words) specifically from new voices in our field.

Potential topics include (but are not limited to):
  • Drama in Education in discourses of artistry, pedagogy, engagement, and activism
  • Drama in Education and the value of process
  • Global, Inter-, and Transcultural Drama in Education
  • Theories of Drama in Education
  • The Artistry and Pedagogies of Drama in Education
  • Drama in Education for various ages of learners
  • Facilitation in Drama in Education
  • Modes and Case Studies in Drama in Education
  • Drama in Education Avant Gardes
  • Drama in Education in community arts programs, professional theatres, and schools
  • Justice, inclusion, diversity, and equity in Drama in Education.
Proposed Timeline:
  • Draft Contributions to editors by May 15, 2020.
  • Edited contributions back to authors by August 15, 2020.
  • Final submissions to editors by September 15, 2020.
  • Anticipated publication Spring 2021.
