Jordi Palet i Puig, 21st ASSITEJ Spain Award for Theatre for Children and Young People

On Monday 23rd November, the 21st ASSITEJ Spain Prize for Theatre for Children and Young People was awarded to the Catalan playwright Jordi Palet i Puig, for his text De azúcar.

“A woman who goes to school every afternoon to look for her grandson. A child who spends every afternoon with his grandmother. A grandfather who is no longer there, but who is looking for a way to keep his memory alive…”; De azúcar tells us about mourning and the power of memory to retain those we love, but who have already left.

Jordi Palet i Puig (Ullastrell, 1973) is a stage director and playwright. He is a member of the company Farrés Brothers y Cía, and his theatre focuses on the language of puppets and objects. He has premiered more than 20 shows, among which we must highlight the playwright’s work Zapatos nuevos, by Tian Gombau/L’Home Dibuixat, which won the Max 2020 Award for Best Children’s Show. Since 2012 he has been teaching visual and object theatre at Institut del Teatre de Barcelona.

Of the text that won the ASSITEJ Prize, the jury, made up of Javier Hernando Herráez, Lorenzo Soto, Rosa Díaz, Nani de Julián and Gonzalo Moreno, highlighted his clear and close writing, his sensitivity, as well as his capacity for evocation. The play will be published as part of the ASSITEJ Spain Theatre Collection.

Fifth International encounter of arts for early childhood

Petit als Nuvols, the virtual edition of El més petit de tots

This year, El més petit de tots, festival of performing arts dedicated to early childhood, is going up in the cloud. The festival is opening a digital space called Petit als núvols (Petit in the Clouds), where you can find online proposals for families, teachers, artists and professionals in the early childhood arts.

One of the main fields of work for ASSITEJ Spain is dramaturgy for young audiences. For this reason (despite having to postpone, for health reasons, the 2nd Conference on Dramaturgy to July 2021), last July 23rd we held a Dramaturgy Meeting between the Mexican playwright Maribel Carrasco and the Spanish playwright Itziar Pascual, who held a virtual dialogue on writing for children. It was a delicious afternoon in which more than one hundred people from all over the world were able to enjoy and learn with them.

Both authors will be published by ASSITEJ Spain during 2020.

This activity was organized together with five other entities: TTP, TeVeo, AAT, UNIMA and ENT-NAE.

The meeting was recorded, and now it is possible to watch the whole thing on video here.

The 32nd edition of Mostra d’Igualada will be held from 15th to 18th April 2021.

The artistic call for companies is open until the 15th of August; and it is addressed to national and international shows, of any kind, aimed at children or young people.

In autumn, the Festival will also open a line of support for the production of shows in the areas of large format, new dramaturgies, scenes for young people and cooperation between companies from different territories. The line of support will culminate in the 2022 edition.

Mostra d’Igualada is a member of ASSITEJ Spain, and is one of the main fairs in our country in the field of performing arts addressed to children and young people; a fundamental reference in the region of Catalonia. Its edition this year had to be cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That is why the call for 2021 brings us great joy.
