ASSITEJ International announces an exciting initiative to engage
individuals around the world in a range of experiences designed to
build skills and foster international relationships.
Entitled 'New Faces' this initiative develops the concept of
Next Generation, which was launched at the 16th ASSITEJ WOLRD
CONGRESS in Adelaide. 'New Faces' builds upon the key aims of
the Next Generation project; the creation of professional
development opportunities, opening up opportunities for cross
cultural collaboration and importantly engaging young or new
members to the sector with ASSITEJ International and the National
ASSITEJ Centres in their region.
'New Faces' is a participatory opportunity for 'emerging'
individuals. The opportunities are broad and vary in length
of engagement. They could involve mentorships, residencies,
or internships working alongside producers, directors, festival
curators or arts managers. ASSITEJ International hopes
to encourage its member organisations to offer opportunities for
new members to become involved across a range of performing arts
contexts. Contexts could include festival participation,
residencies in production houses, venues or indeed in any situation
that organizations or individuals may be able to offer. The
programs will be flexible in length and opportunity. Organisations
offering these participation opportunities may be able to offer
varying levels of financial or in-kind support to the successful
applicant/s - this could cover accommodation, per diems, transport
but equally the host organization may not be able to cover any
costs of the participant. Providing an opportunity is the key
to the initiatives success.
HOW WILL 'NEW FACES' PLACEMENTS WORK
ASSITEJ International is seeking 'New Faces' opportunity proposals
from ASSITEJ organizations or individual members. In the
first instance we are asking these to be submitted via your ASSITEJ
National Centre. The proposals will then be forwarded on to
ASSITEJ International to disseminate the information and placement
offers. 'New Faces' opportunities will be advertised on the
ASSITEJ International website and through the newsletter.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT A 'NEW FACES' PLACEMENT OFFER?
Any ASSITEJ member organisation or individual who believes they
are able to support a placement in their work setting. Care should
be given to the time and attention the 'New Faces' individuals will
need in the hosts working environment. Offers of placements
are encouraged across a range of settings and hosts should not be
discouraged by their inability to offer financial support to the
successful 'New Faces' applicants.
'NEW FACES' COMMENCEMENT AND CALL FOR PLACEMENTS
ASSITEJ International is now calling for 'New Faces' offers of
placements beginning January 2011 and beyond. 'New Faces'
will only be as strong and successful as the input and good will of
its member organisations and individuals. We encourage
National Centres and members alike to get behind this exciting new
initiative that will significantly influence future international
collaborations. There are no deadlines for projects to be
submitted, as the initiative is continually open to new placements
from around the world. Be among the first to be a part of
'New Faces' and offer a professional development opportunity
now!
'New Faces' is an official project of ASSITEJ International. For
further information please contact your ASSITEJ national
center.

ASSITEJ go NUTS - A New Faces
Project
Hosted by "ASSITEJ Denmark" and "ASSITEJ Nordic - Network of
neighbours"
ASSITEJ International has encouraged all the national centres to
create "New Faces - initiatives" to welcome new members in the
organisation. I Denmark we believe that the enthusiasm occurs by
the natural and repeated meetings that create international
networks and thereby a passion for ASSITEJ.
Introduction
ASSITEJ go NUTS is based on the naturally repeating meetings
between new faces in the children and youth theatre and in ASSITEJ.
It is a "theatre-exchange". It begins with containing participators
from all the Nordic countries: Denmark (hosting the first meeting),
Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland. The idea is that the network
can grow by naturally meeting friends of friends at new meetings to
even eastern Europe (that the Nordic countries has cooperated with
before) and the rest of the world as well.
The aim is to generate a network among young artists in the Nordic
countries that works with children as audience.
The first meeting is a kind of pilot and a low budget project. We
apply for financial support at the national centres (for flight
tickets) and the Nordic council of ministers for accommodation, the
workshop and other activities.
What is NUTS? NUTS is short for Network of Young Touring Stage
artists. It is a new Danish network that is welcoming new artist in
the environment for professional children and youth theatre. It is
a social network without political or financial interests. The
network is only gathering people. Therefore ASSITEJ is an obvious
international partner.
Participators
- 8 individuals from the NUTS network:
- Katrine Karlsen (Graense-Loes)
- Knut Steen (QUASI Teater)
- Marie Kilsgaard Møller (QUASI Teater)
- Niels Erling (Teater Bloom)
- Line Skytte (Teater Lille Hest)
12 exchange artists from the Nordic countries:
- 3 persons from Sweden (??)
- 3 persons from Norway (??)
- 3 persons from Finland (Minna, Eliisa and ?)
- 3 persons from Iceland (Sindri, ? and ?)
Couples of two Danish participators have each a country with
three participators as their contact persons/special hosts.
The exchange artists can either stay at their specials hosts
(private accommodation) or at a hostel (if we get money for it).
Maybe the hole week is taking place at Odsherred Teatercenter north
of Copenhagen.
There is no age-limit or a definition of being young in this
project. But the participators should be engaged in creating
professional theatre for children and quite new in the field. And
of cause be ready to exchange.
Program
Day 1: Introduction
Arriving, introductions, presentation of participators and their
methods/work, teambuilding exercise. We have dinner together and go
to the theatre.
Day 2 + 3: Speed theater
All the participators are mixed up in groups of five persons. In
28 hours all the groups has to create a performance.
In the evening we show the performances to each other and special
invited guest (fx the Danish ASSITEJ board and young artists).
Afterwards we celebrate with a première party.
Day 4: Children theatre at schools
We rent a bus and watch as many children theatre performances at
schools in the area as possible. In the afternoon we meet the
Danish ASSITEJ board to speed dating. In the evening we eat dinner
together and discuss today's experiences and evaluate the
week.
Day 5: Planning of the next meeting
The hosts and the exchange artists meet in groups to plan how the
next meeting could take place in the exchange artists own country.
Is it possible to apply money? Where could it take place? Who
should participate? Can we expand the network? What should we do
together?
In the afternoon all four groups present their work. We close the
meeting with a dinner and party.
Day 6: Leaving Copenhagen
No program. The guests are leaving. The hosts say goodbye.
Organisation and financials
ASSITEJ go NUTS is arranged by "ASSITEJ Danmark" and "NUTS" with
support from "ASSITEJ Nordic - Network of Neighbours" and the
international ASSITEJ. A project coordinator is arranging the week
and applying money for the project. All the participators are here
as volunteers and because of their passion for meeting other
artists that work with children as audience. The Danish
participators and the boards from the Nordic countries help each
other find the right participators.
The accommodation is depending on the financial support. Either at
the Odsherred Teatercenter, at a hostel or private. Expenses for
food, theatre tickets, rooms for working, rent of bus and salary
for the project coordinator are paid by ASSITEJ Denmark and funds.
The national centres pay flight tickets and per diems.
The next meeting / the baton
This is not a workshop arranged by the grey-haired because they
are afraid everything will die with them. This is an initiative
taken by the new faces, runned by new faces and only kept alive if
by them. It may sound hard, but that is the concept.
This network is only living and growing strong if those who are in
it like to. The next meetings are not planned, but the looking
forward is a part of the program (day 5). Hopefully the network
will get through all the participating countries and maybe even
grow bigger. But it is completely anarchistic and underground, open
for everybody - without rules or goals except from being inspired
by each other. That means that this chain of Nordic networks will
only stay if the participators from the different countries invite.
If they don't - it is not a failure. Then that is the natural
development. The baton should only be passed on to those who can
and want to have it.
When
The first meeting is held at the 17th ASSITEJ world congress.
Here we have discussed the program, participators profiles and also
decided that it should not last too long before the first meeting
is taking place.
Therefore the first meeting is decided to be from 24th - 29th of
January.
Then there could maybe be a possibility to meet already again at
the BIBU festival 2012.
