The prime objective of the programme is to develop child’s mental and physical aspects and to enhance artistic taste, cheerfulness and playful sense of the child through aesthetic experiences. The programme also gives the child the opportunity to learn a sense of caring, world awareness, experience in human relationship and socio cultural values, a sense of basic art forms and more importantly confidence and dignity.
Children between the ages four and half to fifteen can take part in the programme. These activities are perceived as supplementary to the formal education the child obtains in schools. This programme give the child the opportunity to learn the basic of (i) enjoying and appreciating music (ii) free movements (iii) dancing and structured movements (iv) acting and language (v) singing and (vi) art, handicrafts and puppetry.
The programme was initiated by the Late Somalatha Subasinghe, the founder of ASSITEJ Sri Lanka and Lanka Children's and Youth Theatre Foundation. Since then the programme is offered annually for children to get engaged in creative work. In schools children are focused solely on examinations and even aesthetic subjects have become examination oriented. These programmes are tailor made to provide them with completely a different and enjoyable learning experience.
In addition to Creative Activities for Children Programme, Somalatha Subasinghe Play House and ASSITEJ Sri Lanka offer "Lets Make a Play" and "Creative Encounters" programmes during school holidays in August and December.
