Oily Cart seeks to recruit an Artistic Director and an Executive Director. Second call. Previous applicants need not apply.

“There are good theatre companies, and there are great theatre companies. There are great theatre companies, and there is Oily Cart.” Lyn Gardner

After 36 hugely successful years, the three founders of Oily Cart – Tim Webb MBE, Claire de Loon and Max Reinhardt – are stepping down from their roles with the company.

Head of Design Claire de Loon left Oily Cart at the end of 2016. Tim Webb, Artistic Director, and Max Reinhardt, Musical Director, are stepping down this year and handing over a company of huge national and international importance to the next generation of inspiring artistic leaders.

Fun, joy, warmth, approachability and humour reflect the essence of Oily Cart with multi-sensory, interactive and audience-led work at its core. The company is particularly and centrally audience-led. Firmly established as constant deliverers of cutting-edge, immersive practice, its remit is focused on work for very young children and for young people with complex disabilities, in particular for those with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), who are on the autism spectrum and more recently for those who are deafblind. The original, highly-crafted and multidisciplinary work tours far and wide, nationally and internationally, participating in the Manchester International Festival or touring to New York. The new creative leadership team will continue to deliver the level of audience provision provided to date, enabling the company to grow and develop over the coming years.

The company is looking to appoint an Artistic Director and an Executive Director offering a clear vision for the future development of the company.

Most recently, Oily Cart has transformed hydrotherapy pools into watery wonderlands in SPLISH, SPLASH, a co-production with National Theatre Wales. After visiting special schools and hospitals across Wales this summer as part of a festival celebrating the NHS’s 70th birthday, the show is heading on a UK tour from mid-September.

Kubla Khan – the company’s first ever production with a version for children and young people who are deafblind – toured nationally from late May. At the beginning of the year, babies, young children and their families were invited to enter the enchanting woodland wonderland of HUSH-A-BYE which toured to venues across the country.

Tim Webb said: ‘Oily Cart has a history of which I am extremely proud but I believe the best is yet to come.’

Chair of the Oily Cart Board Lisa Mead said: ‘The work that Oily Cart, has created over the past 36 years has changed the landscape of work within the theatre sector, specifically for younger audiences and those with complex disabilities or on the autism spectrum – but the company’s impact is far beyond that, they have been creating immersive experiences for a long time! Tim, Claire and Max leave the company in a very strong position, well supported, with an international reputation for creating theatre for all sorts of people. They have been an incredible force within the sector and champions of creating work that places audiences at its heart. Whilst we are extremely sad to see them step down, we are excited about what the next phase will bring.
