Today, Covid 19 has brought us to think of the world beyond borders, to think of a global culture, all affected by the same pandemic. Our international networks, SMALL SIZE and ASSITEJ, share the great advantage of having already brought together artists from around the world, in order to reflect on the issue of childhood and artistic creation.

Such networks can help to invent the world of tomorrow for children. It seems essential to us today to foster access to art and artistic creation at an early age.
The current crisis forces us to invent, innovate and, sometimes, improvise… This is what artistic creation is all about: invent the world, to better understand it. Artists and very young children have an immense capacity for transforming things. And today, we need that, to be able to reinvent ourselves by being creative, individually and collectively, because the virus knows no geographical boundaries.
Children have this exceptional ability to grasp the world with all their senses, and, in this way, they are able to understand all its beauty. It is vital for us to be connected with our full sensory experience, as is the case in the live show. Digital practices numb creativity, they are extremely dangerous especially for very young children, and for the link between the parent and the child.
We believe that art for children is both a right and a duty, a way of repairing childhood that has been plagued by the crisis, which is losing its bearings. Art is a moment of sharing, of communion, which can play an essential role in the psychological reconstruction of populations, families, the parent-child bond, the bond between people, the bond to the body, the bond to nature.
The challenge today is to restore confidence by meeting our planet differently.
Children have a much more direct link to nature. Art has the ability to transform, nourish, unite, and connect us to the world.
We, as artists, speak out loud and clear about the child’s right to access culture, advocating around the world for “cultural health*”, and calling for governmental supports to enable us to play our role in childhood.

Small size in Cape Town – Focus Day on Theatre for Early Years Audiences

On the occasion of ASSITEJ World Congress and Cradle of Creativity festival, Small size will be in Cape Town with some activities on the day dedicated to Early Years audiences. Many Small size members will be involved in different activities on May 27th, such as workshops, panel discussions and performances.

Festival Pépites, l’Art et les touts petits – Charleroi (BE), 11 > 14 May 2017

This year, Pépites, La Guimbarde’s festival of arts for early years, opens to the air and to the city of Charleroi with a whole day of open air activities for families on May 13th.

See the programme of the festival here: https://goo.gl/nSCBKO

    Space Invaders festival – Dublin (IE), 13 > 14 May 2017

Cliodhna Noonan of Acting Up! In Ireland teams up with Fingal arts officer Julie Clarke and artist Jackie Maguire to present the third edition of Space Invaders festival for families and early childhood practitioners on 13 and 14 May 2017.

This year the festival will host companies from Croatia (Puna Kuca), Finland (Dance Theatre Auraco), Poland (Children’s Arts Centre in Poznan) and Ireland (Fiona Kelleher). The artists will present dance, music, theatre and interactive storytelling for local audiences.

Space Invaders is so called because Farmleigh estate is a non-theatre venue in Dublin. Families have the opportunity to enjoy the grounds of the estate after seeing a show.

On the day before the performances early childhood educators are offered the chance to train in a creative workshop setting.

First of all IIAN would like to thank the organisers of On The Edge for putting on a great inclusive festival. All venues were accessible, there was information in different accessible formats, we had sign language interprets performances, audio described performances and a truly inclusive young audience watching the shows.

IIAN had a presence across the 10 days and had lots of opportunities to meet, discuss and think about how ASSITEJ can continue to promote and ensure that festivals and events going forward can continue to be inclusive and accessible and build upon the great work at On The Edge.

During our time in Birmingham we delivered a series of talks, workshops and activities. each we’re well attended and each allowed us and the delegates a chance to learn something new. Our activities included:

    • Pop-Up: From the Edge On to the Centre, an opportunity to share time on a one-to-one basis with a disabled artist.
    • Nuts and Bolts a training session by a disabled practitioner exploring making arts spaces more accessible to all.
    • Harnessing Creativity a workshop with Next Generation participants
    • A Square World scratch performance by Daryl Beeton
    • Play-writing a panel discussion from Theatre-in-Education to the present day

And it wasn’t just IIAN that were flying the flag for inclusion, there was also:

    • Speech Bubbles A practical workshop led by Adam Annand that introduces participants to ‘Speech Bubbles’, an theatre intervention that supports children’s communication development.
    • Social Drama   Lecture by Dr. Carmel O’Sullivan. offering an experiential approach to children and young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
    • Inclusive Theatre Practice: From Margin to InclusionPanel Discussion Karian Schuitema and Tom Maguire

During our time there IIAN spoke with members to discuss ideas for an IIAN Declaration. A chance to create a bold mission statement about an inclusive future for ASSITEJ, that we can share with the EC and fellow members in Cape Town 2017.

here are just a few highlights and what people suggested:

    The IIAN Declaration

    1. General Principles – What do we mean by the term inclusion

    • We actively seek out the barriers that prevent people taking part and remove them
    • Respect, celebrate and work with ‘difference’. We may not all be the same but we are all equal
    • creating a common language around disability

    1. Equality – How can it be achieved?

    • Imbed inclusion within ASSITEJ Constitution
    • Educate and develop an understanding that access is a matter of equality
    • Ask the questions that should be asked… don’t be afraid. we need to start talking

    1. Awareness – How do we promote and encourage?

    • Use more images of inclusive arts with ASSITEJ publications and marketing
    • ASSITEJ International and National centres to have an ‘inclusion champion’ that reports back on inclusive activities
    • Workshops around awareness or awareness information should be part of ‘introduction’ to new members who join ASSITEJ

    1. Accessibility – what needs to change?

    • Al venues at future ASSITEJ events must be accessible
    • When National centres bid to hold the meetings and congress they should demonstrate how they will make their festival accessible.
    • Include access information and disabled artists in publicity

    1. Education – How do we engage young disabled people?

    • Each national centre to make a connection with ‘special schools’ in their location
    • Take shows and workshops into ‘special schools’ and create connections
    • Promote positive disabled role models

    1. Employment and Training – How can we create more opportunities?

    • Grassroots training – opening up our training to disabled people
    • Ensure at least 1 place for a Disabled artist on the next generation programme
    • Actively go and see Disabled art and seek to book it if it is good.

    1. Culture and collaboration – How can we better engage with Disabled artists and inclusive arts?

    • ensure 1 inclusive show is programmed at each festival and event as part of a host requirement
    • use existing networks more effectively
    • Showcasing Disabled artists work that is accessible for all audiences
    • Create an ASSITEJ Inclusive Festival – best inclusive work from around the world
