    Compassion and empathy

Since we launched our World Day of Theatre for Children and Young People campaign, which leads up to the 20th March, with the slogan #Takeachildtothetheatre, much has changed. For many children in many parts of the world it is not practical, possible or advised to take children to the theatre, and many children will be spending days indoors, shuttered away in their own homes, without opportunities for connection or for stimulation beyond what the television can provide.

    Towards the Unknown…

Towards the Unknown… the overarching theme for ASSITEJ for the current three-year term is ringing very true at this moment in the world.
In May we have our 20th World Congress in Tokyo in Japan and The ASSITEJ Japan team is working day and night to make this an occasion to remember; the first ever Congress in Japan and the Mirai Festival the biggest gathering of TYA work ever to be presented to the Japanese people.
This plan has become a hope rather than a certainty.

We have to go on stubbornly pursuing the utopia of the child as a citizen, an individual with full rights, including the right of enjoying Art since early years, which means also to exercise the "right to desire", that we cannot and we are not willing to give up on.

    Stages 2014 – 2020

In May, at the Tokyo Congress, a stage closes for me. After 6 years, I will no longer be part of the Executive Committee. I think about this fact and inevitably a kind of balance is imposed on me.

Beginning the Journey…Pausing to Gather Momentum for Clarity

The 20th ASSITEJ World Congress and International Festival scheduled for May 2020 in Tokyo, Japan is fast approaching with the theme BEGINNING THE JOURNEY.

For me, beginning a journey does not always imply starting a fresh movement. It can imply that the journey had been on, but a need arose that necessitated a pause. This ‘pause’, calls for reflection and stock-taking that requires putting all aspects of the journey in proper perspective and coming up with ways to navigate through perceived and real obstacles.

The 20th ASSITEJ World Congress and International Festival scheduled for May 2020 in Tokyo, Japan is fast approaching with the…

ASSITEJ is a collective, global movement

Lately, in the ASSITEJ Executive Committee we have been having open meetings, and we have had a fundraising working group based on an open call. At these open meetings we have experienced a fantastic participation from several people from the ASSITEJ community, who with commitment and curiosity have brought to the table offers of help with concrete, practical work and new ideas.

    Confronting present, as they said

Thanks to the engagement of ASSITEJ Norway, the Nordic - Baltic network and their supports, 600 professionals of performing arts for young people attended ASSITEJ Artistic Gathering 2019 in Kristiansand, in the best possible conditions: an inclusive space, where people's contributions are strongly supported, and nourished by high quality performances. Of course, Norway is far up north, and everyone can't just buy a ticket and join in.

Towards the unknown: Confronting the present

It is August, and the biggest event of our ASSITEJ community this year is just around the corner: ASSITEJ Artistic Gathering 2019. From the 2nd till the 7th of September, performers, directors, writers, dramaturgs, theatre pedagogues, producers, researchers, scenographers, musicians, dancers, video artists, programmers and artistic directors from all over the world will come together in Kristiansand and explore what is happening in the field of theatre for a young audience right now.

A reason why I am going to Kristiansand, or to other places

Recently I had the chance to watch a film and a performance, and these both impressed me very much. They provided me with a lot of food for thought on the role of the arts and life as an artist. These works are not actually related to TYA, though I think they tell me a lot about TYA indirectly, because they are all about terrible situations in which the disadvantaged, such as children, are firstly influenced and then abused.

Diversity of Cultural Expression and Fairness in Cultural Policies

Encounter and exchange are among the pillars of cultural policies when we aim at the promotion of diversity of cultural expression. But most would agree that our actions to make this a reality have not yet lived up to our own words. What could be innovative and – more important – integrative models of a truly “fair” cooperation?
