ASSITEJ is a collective, global movement

Lately, in the ASSITEJ Executive Committee we have been having open meetings, and we have had a fundraising working group based on an open call. At these open meetings we have experienced a fantastic participation from several people from the ASSITEJ community, who with commitment and curiosity have brought to the table offers of help with concrete, practical work and new ideas.

    Confronting present, as they said

Thanks to the engagement of ASSITEJ Norway, the Nordic - Baltic network and their supports, 600 professionals of performing arts for young people attended ASSITEJ Artistic Gathering 2019 in Kristiansand, in the best possible conditions: an inclusive space, where people's contributions are strongly supported, and nourished by high quality performances. Of course, Norway is far up north, and everyone can't just buy a ticket and join in.

Towards the unknown: Confronting the present

It is August, and the biggest event of our ASSITEJ community this year is just around the corner: ASSITEJ Artistic Gathering 2019. From the 2nd till the 7th of September, performers, directors, writers, dramaturgs, theatre pedagogues, producers, researchers, scenographers, musicians, dancers, video artists, programmers and artistic directors from all over the world will come together in Kristiansand and explore what is happening in the field of theatre for a young audience right now.

It is August, and the biggest event of our ASSITEJ community this year is just around the corner: ASSITEJ Artistic…

A reason why I am going to Kristiansand, or to other places

Recently I had the chance to watch a film and a performance, and these both impressed me very much. They provided me with a lot of food for thought on the role of the arts and life as an artist. These works are not actually related to TYA, though I think they tell me a lot about TYA indirectly, because they are all about terrible situations in which the disadvantaged, such as children, are firstly influenced and then abused.

Recently I had the chance to watch a film and a performance, and these both impressed me very much. They…

Diversity of Cultural Expression and Fairness in Cultural Policies

Encounter and exchange are among the pillars of cultural policies when we aim at the promotion of diversity of cultural expression. But most would agree that our actions to make this a reality have not yet lived up to our own words. What could be innovative and – more important – integrative models of a truly “fair” cooperation?

Encounter and exchange are among the pillars of Cultural Policies when we aim at the promotion of Diversity of Cultural…

    Be Prepared!

The EC Board of ASSITEJ has recently met in Montevideo/Uruguay. What a strong experience to meet artists from that region! We were deeply impressed by the hospitality of our hosts, by the theatre performances, by the city.

    Invisible Power

Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg has recently tried to change the world. Her action, launched with just one person, has turned into a protest of children against the adults’ politics with a focus on climate and environment, on the future. And suddenly an unseen power arose in front of us, the adults, - all that looked very strange and unexpected. What is this? Children who think about adult problems?

Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg has recently tried to change the world. Her action, launched with just one person, has turned…

News from the South, News from the North

From 28th April to 3rd May, the Executive Committee will meet in Montevideo, Uruguay. Six years since its last visit to Latin America (the last EC meeting in the region was in 2013 in Buenos Aires), the EC will cross the ocean to have one of its meetings on this side of the world. The Ibero American centers are happy and full of expectations because, thanks to ASSITEJ support, the Ibero American Network in collaboration with ASSITEJ Uruguay will organize a meeting in Montevideo bringing together representatives of Argentina, Brasil, Cuba, Chile, Ecuador, Spain, Paraguay, Dominican Republic and the EC.

From 28th April to 3rd May, the Executive Committee will meet in Montevideo, Uruguay. Six years since its last visit to…

    Change

We are nearing the end of the second decade in the 21st century. Much has changed, some things for the better, some not. This week I lectured on Ivan the Terrible (a mistranslation, it should be Ivan the Awesome—someone who instills admiration and fear) and of course this brings me to our present world leaders and makes me ponder: how far did we come, as persons, as human beings? The world is civilized; its inhabitant is not, maintained the Spanish philosopher Ortega y Gassett a century ago and while his philosophy is more complex than this quote by itself reveals, it sounds oddly true to me.

We are nearing the end of the second decade in the 21st century. Much has changed, some things for the…

    Inclusivity for the Unknown Future

When I was a child, I went to a school where there were children with certain disabilities. There were children who were deaf, who were blind, with down-syndrome, with epilepsy, and those who were physically challenged in every class. And we did pretty much everything together.

When I was a child, I went to a school where there were children with certain disabilities. There were children…
