Say it loud! (in Cape Town)

I am writing from a wealthy country, which values culture as one of the important assets of a society, and where most children can access to the statute of a person of rights. It allowed, over the years, the progressive development of a vibrant scene in many sectors of creation addressed to children and adolescents, including, prominently, performing arts, undertaken by trained, professional, artists, benefiting of a high level of freedom of expression.

    Introduction

One of the guidelines for writing the introductions to the ASSITEJ newsletter is to write what you are thinking about. What occupies your mind and heart. And as the snow is melting here in Wisconsin I look up and I see two dogs in front of the fireplace and four cats scattered on pillows and cat trees, and I think about interaction. Interaction between humans and animals, between the seasons (because it can start snowing again in a heartbeat in February), between countries and continents, between artists and cultures, and then, of course, between research and practice. The mind wanders.

One of the guidelines for writing the introductions to the ASSITEJ newsletter is to write what you are thinking about….

The Arts are not a matter of age, but of curiosity, the Small Size Days 2017

Since a couple of months, when I attended a conference called “The Periphery” at the Bábkarská Bystrica festival in Slovakia, I have taken interest in cultural peripheries. Attending conferences around the world is always an occasion to listen and think, and every time I leave, my bag is full of information and reflections that start to bounce around, creating movement and new thoughts. So, the issue of Cultural Peripheries has started to resonate, bouncing from thought to thought.

Since a couple of months, when I attended a conference called “The Periphery” at the Bábkarská Bystrica festival in Slovakia,…

    Introduction

Our world seems to be fast becoming a space where segregating between cultures, people, races and genders has become the call of the hour. Politicians of some of the biggest and oldest democracies are winning campaigns based on hate speeches. At a time where we need to be inclusive some are opting to be exclusive.

Regional Workshops. Or How to share our experiences…

It is a huge pleasure to finally be able to accomplish something that arose a while ago. Once, six or…

    NOI – 我们 – VIÐ – WE

This autumn I have had the great privilege to attend and speak at two important ASSITEJ events in very different parts of the world. The first one was the International Drama Salon held in Beijing in conjunction with the China Children’s Theatre Festival in late August. The second one was the In-Forma event held by ASSITEJ Italy in Bologna at the beginning of September. Both events were very well organized and also, I’m happy to say, well attended by local TYA artists.

This autumn I have had the great privilege to attend and speak at two important ASSITEJ events in very different…

    Introduction

Global events that are shaking the world, universal topics of social inequality and inequality in general, the infinite row of images revealing the crude faces of capitalism, these are today’s topical issues. The young of course feel these mounting problems that are threatening their future. The questions that the artists are facing are how to overcome these issues and whether it is utopian to believe that working with youth art can affect tomorrow and contribute to a better world.

ASSITEJ Artistic Gathering for 2016 such a success

July 2-9th was an incredible week, if you were with us, thank you for helping make On The Edge, the ASSITEJ Artistic Gathering for 2016 such a success. A Report from Asia

These days, ASSITEJ in Asia is very active.

The Annual Asian Meeting, which was held in India last year, will be held in Sri Lanka in West Asia this year from August 18th to 20th.

Last summer when we, the presidents from China, Korea, and Japan, had an opportunity to meet, we had decided to have an annual festival rotating among us on a regular basis, and the first one will be held in Beijing, China at the China International Festival for Theatre for Children this summer.

These days, ASSITEJ in Asia is very active. The Annual Asian Meeting, which was held in India last year, will…

Getting ready to be “On the Edge“…

When our colleagues from the UK and Ireland invented “On the Edge” as a motto for the ASSITEJ Artistic Gathering in Birmingham, their idea was to create openness, initiate experiments, inspire new approaches and question the things we may feel quite sure about. In just a few weeks’ time, we’ll have the opportunity to experience a programme full of ideas that are presented on stages and podiums, in talks and workshops and we are looking forward to it.

When our colleagues from the UK and Ireland invented “On the Edge” as a motto for the ASSITEJ Artistic Gathering…
